Centerline Drivers helps alleviate food insecurity in Connecticut

In 2019, food insecurity levels in the United States were the lowest they had been since Feeding America began measuring it in the 1990s. But economic harm from COVID-19 drove more people to visit food banks, including those who had never visited before in 2020. Feeding America estimates that 1 in 7 Americans, or 45 million people, experienced food insecurity and an additional 17 million people experienced very low food security in 2020 – 15 million more people than in 2019.

In Connecticut, regional food bank Foodshare met this increased demand by setting up drive-through food banks at the University of Connecticut’s Rentschler Field in East Hartford. The football stadium served as the perfect location for the thousands of cars picking up food each day.

“At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Foodshare immediately assessed the situation and rapidly pivoted its operations to ensure that we could help provide food to the people in Connecticut who were newly food insecure,” said Dom Piccini, Foodshare’s logistics manager. “On April 20, 2020, Foodshare launched a temporary emergency distribution site at Rentschler Field in East Hartford. [Through March 2021], this site alone has provided over 6.7 million meals to nearly 250,000 households.”

But they needed the food to get to the stadium. So they enlisted the help of Centerline Drivers, who began providing daily drivers for the site and hired new drivers based on the need.

“Our team made sure that the drivers understood what they were working for and how they would be making a difference,” said Centerline Account Manager David Houlihan. “We wanted to put drivers in there who wanted to be part of this amazing project of feeding Connecticut’s hungry families.”

As Centerline and Foodshare approached the one-year anniversary of the East Hartford distribution site, the mutual partnership led to a recommendation for Centerline to begin work with The Connecticut Food Bank. The new work will open up the opportunity to provide food to nearly every person in Connecticut who needs it.

“Foodshare is thankful for our partnership with Centerline, helping to place and hire expertly matched drivers for our organization,” Piccini said. “Our transportation department is key to ensuring our community struggling with hunger is receiving the food they need in a timely and safe manner.”

Save gas and stay safe on the road with tips from Centerline Drivers

On March 14, the average price of regular gasoline in the US was $4.43 per gallon. Diesel was up more than $2 from a year ago, at $5.20 a gallon. With spring rolling in and road trips on the horizon, how can consumers and professional drivers alike save money at the pump and stay safe on the roads? Centerline Drivers presents these tips based on discussions with industry safety leaders to help all drivers make the most of their next road trip or commute.

Slow Down, Save Gas – and Lives. With gas prices soaring, driving at a slower pace conserves more than energy. Because high speeds mean lower gas mileage and efficiency, you’ll be saving money and increasing your safety. Using cruise control on the highway instead of speeding up and slowing down will also help reduce gas usage.

Control your climate. Too much heat or air conditioning can affect gas mileage. Turn the heat down or the air up and use it sparingly.

Don’t idle, go inside. Picking up food? Don’t idle in the drive-thru. Idling uses as much gas as starting the engine. Park and go inside instead. You’ll not only save gas, but get a little exercise, too.

Get the most direct route with a GPS. Finding the most direct or fuel-efficient route doesn’t have to be difficult. Many GPS tools, including on your phone, can find the most fuel-efficient way to get from point A to point B.

Watch your wheels. Underinflated tires are a safety hazard, but they also are a gas guzzler. In addition to being dangerous, underfilled tires could reduce your fuel efficiency by 10 percent.

Stay up On your maintenance. A car or truck is a well-oiled machine. Or at least, it should be. Proper maintenance will keep your vehicle running smoothly and efficiently, helping you make the most out of your fuel.

Nelson Gray, Andrew Alspaugh, Mark Hodge and William Rosario earn regional Drivers Of The Year honors

Congratulations to Centerline drivers Nelson Gray, Andrew Alspaugh, Mark Hodge and William Rosario on being named regional drivers of the year by Hawk Logistics.

Nelson Gray was named driver of the year for the West region. He is a limestone driver and a driving coach in Texas who has been with Hawk since 2017 and in the trucking industry for nearly 40 years. He drives more than 2000 miles per week across Texas. He has had zero preventable accidents and is consistently in the top 5 of all Hawk drivers nationally in terms of safety. His performance highlights included a 99.22% metrics scorecard, 7.2 miles per gallon, 0.5% Over Speed, 6% stopped idle, 1 hard brake per month, no service failures and perfect attendance. He served in the U.S. Army as a vehicle mechanic and logistics operator from 1981-1996. He has been married for 20 years and enjoys restoring old cars, welding and light home restoration.

Hawk Logistics said about Nelson: “Nelson was one of the first to express interest in the drivers coach program and it’s his ability to go above and beyond in his coaching that has made the onboarding for every driver that he has trained an easy one. Nelson meets all his trainees at the front of the facility with all safety equipment and the Hawk onboarding handbook along with another more in-depth handbook, which he created, explaining in more detail how to use our cellcom and ELD systems. He will get on top of the trailers while loading with each trainee to ensure they know exactly what the proper and safe procedures are to load and none of it is just for show. He’s been observed many times from Hawk staff, other coaches and drivers doing the same detailed and helpful training each and every time at all hours throughout the week.”

Andrew Alspaugh was named driver of the year for the East region. He is an asphalt driver in Pennsylvania and has assisted the entire Northeast region with jobs. He has been with Hawk Logistics for almost four years and boasts not only a clean safety record but an overall metrics scorecard of 91.52%. His performance highlights include 3.2% over speed, 8.2% stopped idle, 2 hard brakes per month, no preventable accidents and perfect attendance. Along with his wife and seven kids, he is active in his church in Brickerville, Pa., and recently volunteered to help local famers in the area plant and pick crops.

Hawk Logistics said about Andrew: “In an ever-changing world of COVID-19 and safety related concerns, Andrew has been a cornerstone in the sanitization of tractors and dissemination of safety supplies to drivers in Myerstown. The ability to measure a good driver is not just based on performance and safety, we must also take into account the reliability and positivity of the driver. Andrew’s attendance has been exemplary in 2020. As an employee assigned to the Hawk account he has been a team player, a motivator, a teacher, a lead and an inspiration.”

Mark Hodge was named over the road/regional driver of the year. He joined Hawk as its first over the road/regional driver onboarded in Indiana in 2019 and has more than 45 years of driving experience. He has trained other drivers in the region, impressing upon drivers his standards for operational performance, including thoroughness, compliance, proper load securement and safety. He contributed to the Midwest region’s 263-day safety streak in 2020. His performance highlights include a metrics scorecard of 84.84%, 7.17 miles per gallon, 3.6% over speed, 17.8% stopped idle, no service failures or preventable accidents and perfect attendance. He drives 2500 miles per week and enjoys spending time on his farm in Illinois with his wife, two daughters and seven grandchildren when he’s not driving.

Hawk Logistics said about Mark: “Mark is committed to excellence within the operation and takes pride in his work and more specifically his equipment. He keeps his truck pristine at all times inside and out. He was one of the first drivers to recommend headache racks on our trucks to help haul all equipment needed to complete the job effectively. Prior to getting them installed he developed his own way to secure all necessary equipment in order to be able to haul everything we had within our network safely.”

William Rosario of the Tampa Sand Fleet earned East Region honorable mention for his daily contributions to the operation’s success, including scheduling, overseeing maintenance and coordinating with the plant and training and supervising drivers. He has been with Hawk for two years and was an owner/operator prior to that. His hard work overseeing the Tampa team resulted in the team having the highest average metrics score in the fleet at 98.3%. His personal results include a metrics scorecard of 99.28%, 6.8 miles per gallon, 0.0% over speed, 4.9% stopped idle, one hard brake per month, no service failures or preventable accidents and perfect attendance. Along with his wife and five children, he is active in his local church in Port Richie, Fla., and works with the church’s program to feed the hungry and hand out clothing and personal items to those in need.

Hawk Logistics said about William: “We regularly hear accolades from the plant on his hard work. In his two years with Hawk he has been accident- and incident-free. He is our boots on the ground that allows us to oversee the operation from 1100 miles away! We believe Will is an individual that can grow and develop in other opportunities outside of driving due to his success within our organization.”

Congratulations to these four drivers and thank you for your hard work and dedication to Centerline, Hawk Logistics and the transportation industry.

Centerline Drivers and Coastal Pacific Host Post-Holiday Holiday Event for Drivers

Even with masks, closed windows and plenty of distance, Centerline Drivers was able to thank a special group of truckers.

Every January, Centerline and Coastal Pacific Food Distributors in Stockton, Calif. – the second-largest military distributor of food and related products in the world — host a post-holiday holiday party for the hard-working drivers who deliver food and commissary items to military bases across the West Coast. This year was no exception, except it looked a little different.

The post-holiday celebrations are usually large parties attended by drivers and their families and thrown by the two companies to thank them for their hard work throughout the year. Most years, the in-person celebration involves a large convention center, tons of catering and prizes for drivers. With COVID-19, only the prize part stuck around.

“We have to do the celebrations in January because the grocery business is very busy in the fourth quarter,” said John Trahan, director of operations at Centerline. “So we do this at a quiet time, just in time to catch up and get ready for the Super Bowl and Easter. This year, with COVID-19, we couldn’t meet in our normal environment so we set up a drive-thru event for our drivers.”

Centerline Account Manager Robert Perez and Coastal Pacific Transportation Manager Val Cabanig set up stages for drivers and their families to drive through in their cars and enjoy the event. The guests started at the raffle ticket station, where each person received a raffle ticket – including kids – to win great prizes and continued around the warehouse, passing banners and signs of appreciation and thanks.

“We focused mainly on thanking them and emphasizing that they’re the heart of the operation and nothing could happen or be done without them,” Perez said. “All the drivers were greatly appreciative that we didn’t go without doing something for them.”

At the back of the warehouse, they stopped in front of a truck adorned with pictures of each driver, thanking them for their hard work in a challenging year.

There they found Perez and Coastal Pacific COO Tim Tveitnes ready to call raffle tickets and hand out prizes. They handed out almost 20 prizes, including a big screen TV, video games, video game systems and coolers.

The drivers enjoyed being able to hang out – at a distance – with their fellow drivers and families. It lent a sense of normalcy to a difficult year. And to top it off, all of the attendees – 23 drivers and their families totaling more than 75 people – received DIY pizza kits to continue the celebration at home.

“What a wonderful event that Centerline and our Driver Management team put on for our Drivers,” Tveitnes said. “In these trying times it is great to see that we take the time to honor and appreciate these men and women that continue to keep the supply chain moving. We are very fortunate to have the drivers that we do and this is a testament to the efforts Centerline has made to ensure we have the best people possible.”

Centerline on CNBC: Solving the truck driver shortage

Centerline Drivers received national media coverage for its “State of Trucking” report in December.

On Dec. 22, Centerline Drivers Executive Leader Jill Quinn appeared on CNBC to discuss the truck driver shortage, Centerline’s State of Trucking survey and what companies can do to improve recruiting. She spoke to the Power Lunch program.

Thanking Our Drivers

How will you #thankatrucker? If you’re part of the Centerline Drivers team, it may involve delicious burritos.

Each quarter for the past ten years, various Centerline client locations celebrate our drivers by bringing in Chipotle meals to thank them for being safe, compliant and reliable members of the over-the-road community. Whether it’s small groups or 75 drivers, the celebration goes on. Last month, it was a team in Texas.

“Our team in Texas had zero risk-related issues in the third quarter, which is an impressive milestone so we decided to share a meal with them,” said Centerline Director of Business Operations John Trahan. “Showing gratitude and appreciation for our drivers is the least we can do.”

Centerline has a long history of providing drivers with rewards like this because without drivers, products can’t get where they’re going and the supply chain would stop.

Centerline also honored its team in Indiana for 65 accident-free days and are working with clients to honor other teams as well. So the next time you’re on the road be sure to thank a trucker.

Overcoming Adversity to Continue Her Passion

For Sheila Castaneda, putting drivers on the road is not just a job, but a mission of hers. As a director of business development at Centerline Drivers, she takes pride in getting to know her drivers personally, many of whom tell her that driving for her Mobile Driver Services division has changed their lives.

“Sheila’s success is in helping people,” said colleague John Trahan, also a director of business development at Centerline. “She is a pioneer in our industry and has set the stage for creating solutions within our industry that support trucking and women. Her staff and clients love her. She has made a strong impact on so many and has created so much opportunity for so many. The world of transportation is a better place due in part to Sheila’s efforts.”

But on Nov. 11, 2016, none of that mattered. Suffering from constant pain in her left leg and without a diagnosis from any doctor, she went to the emergency room to get help. Thanks to a lucky interaction, she found out what was wrong, but also learned she had a difficult decision to make.

“A vein specialist happened to be the emergency doctor on call in the hospital that day,” she said. “He found the problem right away and I was told I could not go home; it was not safe.”

The problem was antiphospholipid syndrome, a rare disease in which the body’s immune system produces abnormal antiphospholipid antibodies, which cause blood clots in the legs, kidneys, lungs and brain.

“The doctor tried surgery first and graphed an artery to my foot to see if it would work,” Castaneda said. “I was able to finally go home on Christmas Eve but by New Year’s Eve, I was back in the hospital as it did not take.”

She learned that the issue would be life-threatening if she did not take care of it. Her other two options were not much better: continue coming to the hospital each time she needed help or have her left leg amputated.

One in four adults in the United States lives with a disability and worldwide, there are more than 1 billion people living with disabilities. The International Day of People With Disabilities on Dec. 3 aims to show support and raise awareness of “the importance of creating a future where people with disabilities experience equal opportunity and face no barriers in all aspects of their lives.”

Living – and thriving – with a disability is not easy. Between the physical barriers, workplace barriers, societal barriers and additional healthcare issues, day-to-day life can be a challenge. Adding in those barriers later in life, as Castaneda did, can be even more challenging. But it was the result of a difficult, but important decision.

“I am not one who likes to spend time in the hospital, so that was not an option and neither was doing nothing,” Castaneda said. “My family really wanted me to be well and be with them for years to come so they completely understood my decision. I could not have done this without the love and help of my family. My girls are always there for me in happy and tough times. I know they will be there for me always as I will be for them. I also couldn’t have done it without my work family’s understanding and well wishes. It was, and still can be a very emotional time.”

Knowing that it would be difficult, but it would end the pain and danger to her health, she chose to have her left leg amputated in early 2017. Through therapy and the support of her family and colleagues, she was able to adjust to her new life and return to where she felt she belonged – at the helm of Centerline’s Mobile Driver Services.

“Sheila is an amazing example of perseverance and dedication,” said Centerline Drivers President Jill Quinn. “Her strength and selflessness in the face of personal adversity is incredible. She has always been and remains selfless and dedicated to helping others, whether that’s at work or in her personal life. She is an inspiration and an influential leader to everyone at Centerline.”

For more than 30 years, Castaneda has been a constant in the transportation industry. As so many changes have happened around her, she’s maintained a focus on building Centerline into the national company it is today and making sure her drivers have what they need to succeed. She was a key member of the leadership team that supported the development of a 24/7 service center for drivers and customers, supported by live personnel, and has been instrumental in building Centerline Drivers’ Mobile Driver Division into a multi-million-dollar, national organization. She is both a friend and confidant to hundreds of truck drivers across the country.

When she returned to work in May 2017, she didn’t know what to expect at first. But she knew that she needed to continue doing what she does best: making a difference in other people’s lives and proudly helping people in difficult situations. It wasn’t easy, but she got through the difficult transition through “the grace of God, my family, my work family, a very good therapist, and the joy I get from changing our drivers’ lives.”

“It might sound a little cheesy but it’s very true,” she said. “I had to look deep inside myself and decide where it is I see myself and how I am going to get there.”

As she has overcome adversity to be a leader in the industry, she has continued to serve others, as a mentor to women across the industry, as a role model for aspiring leaders and as a board member with Truckers for the Homeless, which gives such items as socks, blankets and personal hygiene to those in need. She also serves on TrueBlue’s Diversity and Inclusion Council because she believes that helping and supporting those in need, those facing adversity or those looking for guidance is vital. Because you never know when you will need those things.

“Everything happens for a reason,” she said. “Know that someday God will place someone in your path that you need to help and you need to be prepared. Continue to love life and know that every day is a gift.”

Centerline was also named to WIT’s Top Places for Women to Work in Transportation list in both 2019 and 2020. A longtime promoter of driver safety, Quinn led efforts to ensure drivers were informed and prepared during COVID-19, as Centerline supplied over 10,000 masks along with gloves, hand sanitizer and other cleaning items for its drivers to use to disinfect their truck cabs. Quinn’s dedication to health and safety is matched only by her passion for connecting people to work and building a positive employee culture. An accomplished leader, Quinn took on the additional role of executive leader of PeopleReady Skilled Trades in September 2020. She also sits on the Board of Governors of the National Private Truck Council. This is her third appearance on the list.

Loree Lynch serves as the senior vice president of operations for Staff Management | SMX, which specializes in on-site management of scalable, contingent workforces across North America. A trailblazer in the staffing industry as a founding partner of Staff Management | SMX, Lynch pioneered the idea of on-site staffing and grew it into an international business that connects people and work across North America. As senior vice president in charge of Staff Management | SMX’s Centralized Services function, she combines workforce development, recruiting, onboarding, safety, and data analysis to illustrate to clients how best to staff their supply chain functions—while ensuring that associates have a positive experience from interviewing through hiring and onboarding to their day-to-day work. She helps cultivate positive interactions between associates and the client so that processes run smoothly and productivity remains high. Lynch steered the company through its safety response to COVID-19 for associates, clients and employees.
