One of the initiatives the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to save lives on the nation’s highways is to intensify the focus on highway-rail grade crossing safety. The FMCSA has launched a nationwide educational campaign to remind commercial motor vehicle drivers of the precautions they must take at highway-rail grade crossings.
A highway-rail grade crossing is an intersection where a roadway crosses railroad tracks at the same level or grade. Such crossings may be encountered on both public and private roads. There are more than 250,000 of these crossings in the U.S.

Employment regulations on the state, local and federal level are no strangers to change. But in recent years, this field has become even more volatile due to the pandemic, changing economic landscape and national conversations about worker regulations.

Joel Lawson is Centerline Drivers’ 2022 Driver of the Year. This is the second year Centerline has awarded the honor as part of its Respect the Drive program, which celebrates the incredible work truck drivers do every day.
Joel is a Baltimore native who has driven over 3 million miles in his 20 years as a truck driver, with no DOT accidents or incidents.
He is a proud Army veteran who served our country in Desert Storm and began serving with the National Guard after his discharge.
Joel is a hard-working person who describes himself as a “family man” spending most of his free time “being a husband and father.“
His dedication to his family is evident most when he recalls an accident that occurred right before he became a truck driver. A fire broke out in their apartment and Joel was able to quickly get his wife and family to safety. However, due to the amount of times Joel re-entered the burning building, he suffered from smoke inhalation and severe burns on his hand. He says the scars are a “life-long reminder of how precious his family is to him.”
He drives for Standard Logistics in Baltimore and has done so for almost 15 years. He enjoys working with his team and often mentors newer drivers.
The award comes with a trophy, Respect the Drive gear and a $5000 bonus as well as recognition from both Centerline and Standard Logistics.
Throughout 2023, Centerline will continue to encourage people to Respect the Drive by illustrating the positive things truck drivers do every day and celebrating our drivers and the industry.
“Joel embodies what it means to be an outstanding Centerline Driver,’” said Centerline Drivers President Jill Quinn. “Not only has he driven over 3 million miles safely, but he’s a hero in multiple respects. I’m so proud that he’s our 2022 Driver of the Year”

Last month, the Department of Transportation released the National Roadway Safety Strategy, a comprehensive approach to significantly reduce serious injuries and deaths on the nation’s highways. The strategy works by building and reinforcing multiple layers of protection, both to prevent crashes from happening in the first place and to minimize the harm caused to those involved when crashes do occur.
This is a departure from the conventional safety approach because it focuses on both human mistakes and vulnerability —then designs a system with many redundancies in place to protect everyone.

Steve Cooper was appointed CEO of TrueBlue in June 2022. Cooper has served as a Director of TrueBlue since May 2006 and as Board Chair from January 2019 to July 2022. Previously, Cooper served as TrueBlue’s CEO from 2006 to 2018, as President between 2005 and 2015, and as Executive Vice President and CFO between 2001 and 2005. Over his more than two-decade and successful tenure with the business, Cooper has led the company through tremendous growth and has proven his effective leadership and coaching skills, and financial and accounting expertise. Cooper has a unique ability to develop consensus and his belief in the power of TrueBlue’s mission to connect people and work has grown deeper every year.
Taryn Owen
President and COO, TrueBlue
Taryn Owen was appointed President and Chief Operating Officer of TrueBlue in September 2022. In her role, Owen leads all TrueBlue operating segments—PeopleReady, PeopleScout, and PeopleManagement—as well as the company’s technology, marketing and communications, and human resources functions. Owen is responsible for furthering the company’s well-established strategies for long-term growth and extending its track record of exceptional execution and engagement. She has an unwavering commitment to serving TrueBlue’s clients and mission, and is passionate about building a vibrant and inclusive workplace. Owen joined TrueBlue in 2010 and has served as President of TrueBlue operating segments PeopleReady and PeopleScout. Over her tenure, Owen has led the company through periods of significant growth, was instrumental in its pandemic response, and spearheaded its digital transformation strategies.
Carl Schweihs

In his role with TrueBlue’s PeopleManagement division, Carl Schweihs provides strategic direction for three distinct staffing segments—Centerline Drivers, SIMOS Solutions and Staff Management | SMX. Last year, Schweihs led efforts to introduce new technology to make workers’ lives easier by managing their work from a new mobile app that serves as an extension of the existing innovative Stafftrack workforce management tool. Known for his collaborative leadership style, Schweihs previously served as TrueBlue’s Senior Vice President of Strategic Accounts—delivering the full spectrum of TrueBlue’s solutions to produce higher ROI for the world’s largest brands.
